Farewell, Dan Grove Back to Memorial Page

Daniel Thomas Grove passed away on Wednesday, March 8, 2017 following failing health. Dan leaves behind Nancy Floyd Grove, his loving wife of 38 years, his stepson, Paul Andrew Hosier (Marysusan Hosier), and two grandchildren, Somerville Emily Hosier and Daniel Hannah Secrest Hosier. In addition, he leaves brothers and sisters, Larry Grove (Peggy), Janice Johnson (Terry), Martin Monks (Janet) and Ron Monks.

Dan joined the Air Force following high school and loved his time in the service. Although hay fever disqualified him from realizing his dream of becoming an Air Force pilot, he later attained his private pilot's and helicopter licenses. Dan piloted his own small plane for a number of years and was never happier than when he was in the air.

Following his service in the Air Force, Dan attend The Pennsylvania State University, earning his BS in Engineering Science in 1968 and his MS in Electrical Engineering in 1970. Dan was a member of two honorary fraternities, Eta Kappa Nu, and Sigma Tau.

Dan worked for a number of companies in Silicon Valley, California including Intel, National Semiconductor and Hewlett Packard. He received several recognition awards for outstanding achievement in sales while at Hewlett Packard. After he retired from Hewlett Packard, he and Nancy made their home in Gardendale, Alabama.

Dan loved the outdoors. He successfully summitted Mt. Whitney in California. He particularly enjoyed a trip down the Colorado River in the Grand Canyon with Nancy. He became proficient at technical rock climbing and taught others in the sport.

In his earlier years, Dan enjoyed traveling and he and Nancy fulfilled their dream of seeing Machu Picchu. There were several trips to Hawaii, where they honeymooned; a number of trips to Alaska; many trips to the National Parks of the west, and a wonderful cruise through the Panama Canal.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 pm on Sunday, March 26, 2017 at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Birmingham, 4300 Hampton Heights Drive, Homewood, Alabama.
